My sculptures and works on paper begin with an examination and appropriation of uncommon art materials. Coal and dirt are collected from train tracks, concrete and lace are cast together, frosting, wax, rubber, steel, cardboard and debris collected from inside my home are potential medium.
No matter the materials, my work begins from a personal place and moves outward examining broad notions of longing, memory, isolation and imperfect beauty.

coal dust on paper
Coal from the dirty lace series was collected from along the train tracks of various WV towns. Living there and working as a professor at Marshall University, these weekend treks through the hills and valleys of WV allowed me to see and connect to the breadth and depth of a new landscape
